Who am I? Why am I here? These are the questions that many of us ask. Finding significance for good mental health is not an option, but a necessity. Today many people suffer mentally and it is said to be our number one health concern in our country. Mental illness can be described or labeled by professionals in so many ways, such as depression, psychosis, OCD, PTS, GAD and many others. The root of a disease should always be pursued and that can be done by the work of a professional, but what can we do?
I believe finding significance is vital for good mental health. Here are a few questions to ponder as you evaluate your own mental wellbeing. “Do you feel significant? Do you feel there is direction and purpose for your life? Do you feel loved?” How many people today self-medicate their pain away through drugs and alcohol? Finding significance, purpose and love many times is the root to many mental illnesses. Maybe the pain of the past also needs to be addressed for the sake of our mental health. Here are ten questions that we may ask ourselves when we are suffering mentally:
- Am I fulfilled in life or at least moving forward towards a goal?
- What mistakes or bad choices have I made in the past?
- Can I correct these missteps or unproductive periods in my life and transform my thoughts?
- Has my experiences in life made me a better person?
- If not, what can I learn from these experiences?
- Do I understand that I cannot always control life circumstances?
- Do I believe that I do have control over my choices today and that I can contribute to society in some way and choose to be thankful?
- Can I forgive myself, forgive others and forgive the past? (See my post on forgiveness.)
- How do I define good mental health for me personally?
- What can I do today to get help, take responsibility, move forward, and give back to society?
Do you have a higher power to go to? The Bible says in Ephesians 2:10: For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Do you believe you are special, because you are. You are a significant person and there is a reason for your life. Sometimes we just need to find peace. TODAY is a new day. How will you look at your future from here on out? Will it be one with health, healing and hope? I sure hope so, because you are loved by your Creator.
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” — Revelation 3:20
