Can we treat Mononucleosis naturally? Mononucleosis is a contagious disease that often is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus or herpesvirus 4. Its symptoms include: fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, swollen glands and a possible enlargement of the spleen and liver. Often it is contracted along with strep throat, and heart palpitations can also accompany this. Another words, mononucleosis or mono is not fun!
Mono is usually contracted through saliva and kids tend to get it more, so sharing anything is never a good idea, but try convincing your teen that. To determine if you have mono, you will need to visit your physician and get a blood test for confirmation.
Recently my daughter came down with both mono and strep while at college; and I need to mention that she was also anemic. Not a good combination! She went to visit the school nurse practitioner and got the blood test to confirm the positive diagnosis. So the nurse went ahead to prescribe an antibiotic and steroid for the swelling in the throat and sent her home.
Over the course of a week, we saw no improvement. She was taking way too many acetaminophen for the pain and continued to get weaker, lose weight and not able to eat. For her, the steroids made no difference at all. Finally, I had enough!
Sometimes you never know what will work, but my efforts paid off very quickly. I immediately got out my diffuser and put in Silver Sol to rid the room of any lingering bacteria. The next thing that I did was attend to her swollen throat. I got out my handy castor oil and slathered it all over her neck and then put on top of that oil of Oregano. I did the same with her feet. You see, oregano is a great natural antibiotic and there is plenty of research on the positive implications when it comes to fighting illness.
The last thing that I gave her was activated charcoal. I wondered about mono, and know it’s a virus so I thought I’d give it a try. How weird is that? Charcoal is used every day to filter water from toxins and is even given for food poisoning in hospitals. Charcoal is not absorbed, so it carries adsorbed substances out of the body and into the feces. There is some amazing research on charcoal, here is a very interesting one related to kidney disease: Dialysis Free Protocol for Some End Stage Renal Disease Patients.
So I used both the oregano and charcoal to try and fight the mononucleosis. The next day….What a miracle! She woke up with no fever, her swelling was almost completely gone; she got out of bed, ate some food and turned on a video! Talk about a complete transformation! Which was most effective, the oregano or the charcoal? I don’t really know except to say that they worked. I just love natural.
There are some drug interactions with charcoal, so as always consult your physician first.

Hi. I just found your website when looking for treating mono with activated charcoal. Can you tell me what form you gave to your daughter and if it was the capsules, how many!
I appreciate your help!

Hi Elizabeth, sorry about the delay. I would just follow the back of the bottle or use as needed. Don’t take with food and best to take with a lot of water.
