Are you looking for a natural sunscreen recipe that is safe for you or your child? I think many of us are. Today’s sunscreens are made with man-made chemicals that can cause health problems. Just one, Octyl Methoxycinnamate or OMC is a UVB and is in 90% of sunscreens today and is said to be more toxic to the body once it is exposed to the sun. Vitamin D, which the sun provides is good for us and we are now learning that many of us lack it. Read my post about Vitamin D Deficiency and 38 Diseases. So what should we do? We cannot always avoid the sun because we need it. Depending upon our skin tone, some of us need sun protection more than others. So application is definitely an individual preference.
How about creating our own? I have found this great site that provides many of the ingredients needed, including the dark blue containers or spray bottles at a decent price here. I have 2 different recipes, depending on if you like spray or cream better. But first, let me tell you why these ingredients are beneficial:
- Coconut Oil accelerates re-epithelialization, improve antioxidant enzyme activity, and stimulate higher collagen cross-linking within the tissue being repaired, speeds burn and wound recovery.
- Shea Butter – this oil heals and moisturizes the skin, protects it against inflammation and helps with pain from sunburn, cuts, rashes and skin problems.
- Zinc Oxide is an inorganic chemical compound that occurs naturally in zincite. It is an antioxidant and is able to soothe, protect and heal the skin. It is also able to absorb UVA and UVB ultra-violet light and is a natural UV blocker.
- Beeswax is a natural fuel created by bees and is an ester of essential fatty acids. It forms a protective barrier of the surface of the skin and is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-viral.
- Lavender has Linalol which heals sores, burns and other wounds. Pain and inflammation are reduced at the site of pain with lavender as well.
- Sweet Almond Oil has tons of vitamins and has a natural spf between 30-40. It is also a fatty acid with oleic and linoleic acid which has great benefits.
- Carrot Seed Oil stimulates cell growth, removes toxins, treats scars, wounds and burns.
One last product that is not part of any recipe is Dr. Willard’s Water. This water put into a spray container is GREAT for even 3rd degree burns. See my post and an amazing video here.
If you are really not up to making your own sunscreen, but would like to buy an all-natural product, check this great option out here.

I love the thought of a natural sunscreen, but I haven’t had good success with any. They don’t seem to actually protect from burns.
