Could there be a natural malaria cure already? Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a mosquito and transmitted through a bite. Once infected, the disease travels to the liver. Malaria causes symptoms that usually includes fever and headache and which then can lead to coma and death. According to the World Health Organization, Malaria kills 1,000,000 people per year and 3,000 people per day in Africa. Those statistics are heart wrenching.
Extended Information:
Artemisia annua, also known as sweet wormwood, sweet annie, sweet sagewort or annual wormwood (Chinese: 青蒿; pinyin: qīnghāo), is also said to be a natural and effective against malaria. In this report, entitled Survey of artemisinin production by diverse Artemisia species in northern Pakistan, it says that “Artemisinin has also been demonstrated to be effective against some other parasites including Leishmania , Schistosoma, Toxoplasma and Trypanomosa. It has also antiviral activities and can be used in treatment of hepatitis B and a range of cancer cell lines, including breast cancer, human leukaemia, colon, and small-cell lung carcinomas. Furthermore, artemisinin may be especially effective in treating drug resistant cancers. Another important role of artemisinin is its allelopathic activity; it is a potent plant inhibitor with potential as a natural herbicide. Artemisinin has been considered as a relatively safe drug with no obvious adverse reactions or serious side effects, even for pregnant women. Potential toxic effects have been reported of artemisinin when used for long periods of time. Amongst all Artemisia species studied, the highest artemisinin concentration was found in leaves of Artemisia annua (0.44 ± 0.03%), followed by flowers of A. annua (0.42 ± 0.03%), flowers of Artemisia bushriences (0.34 ± 0.02%), and leaves of Artemisia dracunculus var dracunculus (0.27 ± 0%).
