Government officials are telling us that drug-resistant head lice are becoming the norm…help! If you have ever had head lice in your home, you know how difficult these awful bugs are to get rid of. I remember as a third-grade teacher many years ago we would have to check each student’s hair with a pencil to see if everyone was clear so that they could remain in class. So is there a natural lice treatment that I can make myself?
Louse, which is plural for lice, are actually parasites that feed on warm-blooded hosts or another words you and me! They can be found on the body, but particularly in the hair or pubic area. Their color usually is tan to gray and have eggs called nits that are very difficult to remove. Special lice combs are needed, clothing and sheets need to be cleaned, floors should be vacuumed until all signs of the louse are totally gone. For clothing and sheets, you can put them in a tight plastic bag for a day to kill the bugs and then wash.
I hate chemicals, the less we put into our bodies the better, right?! So what can we do about this terrible pest? I know that essential oils do work and have used them for many different purposes. This summer I had an ant problem, inside and outside my home. Outside on the side of my home there was a HUGE nest. It actually moved when I tried to dig it up. There was just too many of them. I put boiling water on them, but I never seemed to be able to get rid of them all. So one day I thought I’d do a little experiment inside my home by the front door where the ants seem to congregate. I dropped about 2 drops or so of peppermint oil and I just watched the ants. Low and behold they were trying to get away from the drops. There is something, perhaps the smell, that they just don’t like. So that’s when I bought these essential oil packets called FreshWave. I love these! They are essential oil packs to eliminate odor. I buried just one of these inside this enormous ant hill and soon after they were …Gone! I even tried putting these packets on my bug infested tree and it worked! Bugs were gone believe it or not. The only thing is that you may have to use several packs and when it rains, replace them.
So what essential oil formula would be good then to eliminate these pesky parasites? I am sure there are many variations that could help do the job, but below are my recommendations. By the way, I would create this formula and put it into a spray bottle (preferably glass) so that you can spray the hair at least three times in one day and any bedding or furniture necessary. My other recommendation would be to wash the hair first with a Neem shampoo and then apply my “Anti-Lice Spice“. Make sure that you comb this spray thoroughly through the hair. If you are looking for oils, Mountain Rose Herbs are a bulk distributor.
Natural Lice Treatment:
- I would fill the majority of the bottle with apple cider vinegar.
- Add water to dilute just a bit.
- Add 5 drops of peppermint oil.
- Add 5 drops of lemon oil.
- Add 5 drops of lavender oil.
- Add 5 drops of tea tree oil or Melaluca.
- Add 5 drops of eucalyptus oil
- Add 5 drops of clove or garlic oil (you may have to crush the cloves yourself on this one)
- Any other essential oils that are pleasing to smell that you enjoy. (ie. ylang, ylang, rosemary)
- Remember to shake before use.
- Lastly, for stubborn cases, I would coat the hair with coconut oil and wrap it in a shower cap and sleep with it on and wash out in the morning.
- Continue for 7 days.
Hopefully this will help knock out your lice problem. Lice can be overwhelming, especially if you have multiple children. It is a lot of work to eradicate them, so start immediately or they will multiply. Best wishes on conquering this parasite!!
