What is light therapy? Light therapy or phototherapy is essentially exposure to light, specifically to daylight, lasers, lamps, LEDs, infrared, ultraviolet or other full-spectrum light sources for the use of treating certain health related issues. This light is usually prescribed for a certain amount of time and sometimes during a specific time of day as with sunlight. Some uses of light have been used to treat psoriasis, acne, eczema and jaundice, sleep disorders, seasonal affective disorder SAD, depression and more.
In fact, a team of Texas doctors has invented an ultraviolet light (aka Germ Zapping Robot) that kills bacteria like MRSA, Staph and Ebola according to XENEX. Whether UV light is natural, in the form of sunlight, or artificially created through medical devices, it can be used to treat some bacteria and diseases. While exposure to too many UV rays can be harmful, with the proper eye protection, it can be quite beneficial under the direction of a medical professional.
In a PubMed study entitled, Effect of NASA light-emitting diode irradiation on wound healing, had this to say:
We believe that the use of NASA LED for light therapy alone, and in conjunction with hyperbaric oxygen, will greatly enhance the natural wound healing process, and more quickly return the patient to a preinjury/illness level of activity. This work is supported and managed through the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center-SBIR Program.
The RESULTS included the following: LED produced in vitro increases of cell growth of 140-200% in mouse-derived fibroblasts, rat-derived osteoblasts, and rat-derived skeletal muscle cells, and increases in growth of 155-171% of normal human epithelial cells. Wound size decreased up to 36% in conjunction with HBO in ischemic rat models. LED produced improvement of greater than 40% in musculoskeletal training injuries in Navy SEAL team members, and decreased wound healing time in crew members aboard a U.S. Naval submarine. LED produced a 47% reduction in pain of children suffering from oral mucositis.
Here is a video on how LED therapy works. (Note: I’m not advertising this product.)
