Did you know that there really is such a thing as an insulin plant? I would have never believed it until a friend from Puerto Rico told me about his grandparents, and how they would make tea from the Costus igneus plant or as they called it, the “insulin plant” to regulate their insulin levels.
According to WebMD, “Insulin is a hormone that moves glucose from your blood into the cells for energy and storage. People with diabetes have higher-than-normal levels in their blood. Either they don’t have enough insulin to move it through or their cells don’t respond to insulin as well as they should.”
Many people today have diabetes. With Type 1 diabetes, your body cannot make insulin. Type 2 diabetes is when your body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin. This means your body needs more insulin to work effectively. The body will overproduce insulin to try and keep the blood glucose levels normal. Insulin helps to treat both of these types of diabetes.
A Natural Alternative to Insulin and The Research
The leaf of the herbal plant, Costus igneus helps to build up insulin by strengthening beta cells of the pancreas. There is even research that affirms that this natural alternative to using needles works.
First Study:
Effect of the insulin plant (Costus igneus) leaves on dexamethasone-induced hyperglycemia.
Their conclusion read as follows: The leaves of insulin plant (Costus igeus) reduced the fasting and postprandial blood sugar levels, bringing them down towards normal, in dexamethasone-induced hyperglycemia in rats. Reduction in the fasting and the postprandial blood sugar levels with leaves of insulin plant was comparable with that obtained with Glibenclamide 500 µg/kg at 250 mg/kg/day and 500 mg/kg/day of powdered leaves of the insulin plant (Costus igeus).
Second Study:
Antidiabetic Potential of Insulin Plant (Costus igneus) Leaf Extracts in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats
Here is what they had to say, “Costus igneus, Insulin plant is a medicinal plant and capable of having magic cure for Diabetes. Leaf of this herbal plant helps to build up insulin by strengthening β–cells of pancreas in the human body thus popularly known as “Insulin plant” in India.”
Third Study:
A review on Insulin plant (Costus igneus Nak)
Their Abstract reads as follows: “This review supports the therapeutic potential of the leaves in diabetes. However, these results have to be further evaluated and re-validated by clinical trials. The anti-diabetic effect of its leaves is currently been tested in diabetic patients. Studies reveal its role in various diseases, which opens up new clinical research areas. Furthermore, it paves new avenues to explore the compounds responsible for these therapeutic effects, and study the mechanism of its action.”
Herbal Plant Protocol
So if it works, why aren’t we using this? I will tell you the bad news first. The bad news is that it really isn’t available in the U.S., or at least I couldn’t find it. You can find it in India, Puerto Rico and several other places, but it is not readily available in the States and importing it could be a problem. Advocates say that “A leaf a day keeps diabetes away!” They recommend that you actually chew the leaves well and down it with water. If you do get a hold of the tea version or even the plant, I would definitely recommend that you talk with your physician first. That’s always smart health, but it’s nice to know that there is a natural alternative to insulin as well!
