So what do we know about hydrangea root ? The word hydrangea means “water vessel” which seems appropriate if you consider that this root is known to aid in the function of the kidneys and normalize water and salt metabolism. The kidneys play an important role in our bodies and their job includes getting rid of waste, balancing our body fluids and maintaining the body’s pH levels.
Hydrangea Root for Kidneys

As I age, I am always looking for better kidney health, unfortunately some of us calcify stones and sediment in our bodies more than others. Kidney stones are often the result of increased salts and minerals such as calcium and uric acid that crystallizes and builds up in the body. This build up can cause all kinds of issues that include stones, infections, and even cancer. Therefore, good functioning kidneys are not an option.
I love reading reviews on store sites as to how a product has or hasn’t helped people and one that I noticed that people love is hydrangea root for urinary complaints. It was reported in the 1700s that the Cherokee Indians used hydrangea root for eliminating “calculous complaints” (or calcium deposits). The silicon in the hydrangea root may help maintain flexible arteries for good blood circulation as well as help to filter the small tubes going to the kidneys.
This root may be more impressive than most realize, according to a Dr. Shook as quoted by herballeggacy.com:
“He said it was destined to become a universal remedy for phosphaturia, cystitis, alkaline urine, stony deposits, deposits of calcium oxalate (which forms many calculi), chronic gleet, mucus irritation of the bladder in old people, backaches caused by kidney trouble, rheumatism of long standing, arthritis and gouty affections, arteriosclerosis and many other common conditions–quite a claim for a disputed herb! As Dr. Shook said, “Dear student, you will never find a more remarkable herb. ” (ShoA:83). [UW-Hydrangea]

Hydrangea Root for Haglund’s Deformity?
Although there is not a lot of documented research on the hydrangea root and kidney function, various sources and testimonials claim the hydrangea root does have benefits. These include: water and electrolyte balance in the body, bladder stones prevention, and reduced inflammatory processes in the urinary system. It has also been used by some for: frequent urination, gout, inflammation in the prostate and biliary tract, water retention and even calcium deposits in the foot which are bone spurs (Haglund’s Deformity) by applying it on directly!
The beauty of this flower may be more than just what meets the eye. It makes me wonder now about the flowers just sitting outside my window that I may have closed my eyes to.
