It’s back to school season already and that means it is time to prepare for germ season. Whether you are college student or the mother of a young child, staying healthy is important to all of us, so here are some back to school health tips for all students.
Germs, germs, germs! Germs are microscopic organisms that contain bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. Most germs can survive on surfaces for as long as a few hours to a few days, when they are transferred to our hands or body when we touch. At school, the most contaminated sites according to research are usually found at the water fountain, the computer lab on the mouse and keyboard, the locker room and athletic equipment, the cafeteria table, and believe it or not the bathroom sinks. And for college student, the list goes on…TV remotes, dirty dorms and apartments, bars, etc.
Here are some simple tips to keep healthy during this new school year:
- Keep your hands clean and never put them in or around your face. Using natural disinfectant can be extremely beneficial. Wash or sanitize your hands before you eat! Not an option here if you want to stay healthy. Here is a great natural recipe to make your own non-toxic hand sanitizer.
- Drink your daily smoothie to stay healthy and your immune system strong. Here is my delicious banana-coconut chai tea latte smoothie. I even add other ingredients like my daily vitamin D drops, quercetin (for inflammation, heart), spices and more.
- Get plenty of sleep. Late nights can bring your immune function down and makes you more susceptible to colds and flu.
- Stay well-hydrated. Here is a study done that proved staying hydrated was directly connected to exam and academic performance.
- Eat healthy non-processed food as much as possible. This is especially difficult for college students, but if you at least incorporated a healthy smoothie, you are less likely to get sick. If you want to stay better focused for school, studies prove that ADD and ADHD can be curbed by healthier eating, which includes staying away from GMO foods. It all really has to do with what you put into your gut.
- Keep active and moving, the more you sit, the more toxins stay in your system.
- Set for yourself limits for the electronics, especially cellular and wifi products. Research has stated that electromagnetic fields influence a person’s health. A Prevention article stated, “EMF, is a relatively new suspected carcinogen known as high-frequency voltage transients, or “dirty electricity.” Transients are largely by-products of modern energy-efficient electronics and appliances—from computers, refrigerators, and plasma TVs to compact fluorescent light bulbs and dimmer switches—which tamp down the electricity they use. This manipulation of current creates a wildly fluctuating and potentially dangerous electromagnetic field that not only radiates into the immediate environment but also can back up along home or office wiring all the way to the utility, infecting every energy customer in between.”
- Okay here is the obvious, but stay away from alcohol, drugs and late nights. Healthy living creates longevity and less oxidative stress or “rusting” on the body. Remember choices made today will impact your health tomorrow. Cancer doesn’t happen overnight and there are multiple influences, but why not stack the odds in your favor for a healthier and longer life?
It’s a new day and it’s never too late to change. Have a wonderful and healthy school year without the flu!
