If you’ve never gardened before, it’s hard to know where to begin. There are so many methods, choices of materials, seed companies, that it is confusing. I will boil this down to 10 easy steps to organic gardening that will truly help you grow a no-fail garden. I love to research, so here is what I found, I hope that you will find these ideas beneficial:
- Buy non-GMO seed. There are a few vendors I like: High Mowing Seeds or Seed Saver.
- Soak your seeds in Willard’s Water Plant Catalyst to increase your yield and health of the plants, earlier blooming, sturdier stocks and root systems, better resilience to weather extremes. See 60 minutes documentary on it.
- Consider using the Farmer’s Almanac for a guide to know when to plant in your area and what to plant next to each other. They have a great program that will help you design your own garden. Here is my 14×15 garden plot:
- Don’t till the ground! What?! Seriously, you need to check out the Back to Eden garden documentary. Paul Gautschi has what seems to be a divinely inspired garden plan and his soil has more nutrients than most. His method of farming is truly amazing because there are NO chemicals involved, little water needed and maintenance is minimal.
- Mark your garden out, pull out the weeds and layer the “covering”. The first layer on the bottom you will put down newspapers or paper grocery bags. This helps keep the weeds away.
- Next, place about 3 to 4 inches of organic compost or composted manure down. This manure should be at least 6 months old.
- The third layer should be about 2-4 inches of unpainted wood chips finely chopped.
- Fourth, apply one last layer of all-natural compost. Your garden should look something like this picture below from Paul’s garden. Just as a warning…It is not cheap when you are creating these layers of different materials, but you will have better yields and more nutritious food production.
- Plant your garden! Make sure to pay attention to last and first frost in your area and also understand which seeds you may want to start in the house first to give them a head start.
- And don’t forget to keep those bugs and pests away with only natural chemicals. I’ve already written a post that gives a recipe for an all natural insecticide spray here.
Gardening is hard work, but just think of the organic food you will get to feed your loved ones! There is something very satisfying about being able to control what you eat. I wish you an abundant harvest, with much success and very few if any pests!
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. Genesis 1:29
