We are hearing so much these days about inflammation and how dangerous it is to our bodies, so how do we reduce inflammation? Inflammation or oxidative stress in layman’s terms is rusting of the body, and everyone knows we surely don’t want that! What does oxidative stress do to the body? Well just think heart disease, brain issues and just about any other ailment. Basically it makes us age much faster. We all know that we are aging, unfortunately, but how can we slow it down? One big way, believe it or not is to supplement daily with vitamin E. Yes you heard that right, simple vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that inhibits oxidation (rusting) and there’s research to back it up.
The Research Behind Vitamin E
Research published by PubMed says that “high doses, has been shown to decrease the release of pro inflammatory cytokines, the chemokine IL-8 and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels as well as decrease adhesion of monocytes to endothelium.” Wow, what does all that mean? It means you’ll want to take your vitamin E, especially for heart health!
I love research that proves something is effective. Science News had this to say about people with diabetes and kidney failure:
Before treatment, the 23 people with major diabetes complications such as kidney failure produced roughly twice as much C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, as the healthy group did. Concentrations of CRP were about 33 percent higher in blood from the 24 people with mild diabetes than in the healthy volunteers. Vitamin E supplements lowered CRP concentrations dramatically in all three groups. CRP measurements in people with mild disease fell to the healthy groups starting concentration, and those in people with advanced diabetes fell to the concentrations detected in the other diabetic people before treatment.
In yet another study, The effects of vitamin E supplementation on autoimmune found that vitamin E alleviated “the severity of autoimmune disease such as systemic lupus under oxidative stress.” Autoimmune disease is basically the attack of the immune system to normal tissue. Patients with autoimmune diseases usually have a deficiency in nutrients which can initiate or accelerate autoimmune disease. Vitamin E is also mentioned as a defense mechanism for rheumatoid arthritis, celiac, inflammatory bowel disease, and sclerosis. For autoimmune diseases that is said to have no known cure, vitamin E seems worth the try!
How To Reduce Inflammation
If inflammation is a big problem for you, perhaps you are depleted in some essential vitamins and minerals? Consider some of these inflammation fighting nutrients: vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, Glutathione and Magnesium. I really like the Solgar brand of vitamin E. It contains natural forms of d-Alpha Tocopherol plus d-Beta, d-Delta, and d-Gamma Tocopherols, which are considered ideal when taken together, as each one has benefits of its own. Vitamin E that has DL in front of the form is synthetic. Can there be interactions?
Always consult your physician first as vitamin E may affect blood-thinning medication, statins, and NSAIDS, also if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
